About melissa

I am "a hippie with a minivan". A mom of four who has chosen to take the less travelled roads in parenting. We are a unschooling family and learn through life without punishments or rewards. I am a Needle Felting Artist, I love being in the Kitchen, and love to share my passion of Natural Parenting through Workshops and Mentoring. We have a big dream of living on the road and we are in the process of converting a bus!

Unpreschooling?

Have you ever heard of that term? It is not a new one but it seems to be gaining momentum. I have already mentioned the pet peeve I have about using the term unschooling for a preschooler but I thought I would go into it more.

Unschooling is educational choice, an ideological shift that yes, may look, and feel like a continuation from toddlerhood and the preschool years for many, but is at the same time, very different.

concentration

Children are only required to go to school or have an alternative educational model once they reach school age, and once they reach that age, unschooling is not a choice that is not taken lightly as it requires a complete paradigm shift on how children learn and trust that children will learn what they need without any imposed curriculum.

Preschool is not a requirement just as daycare is not a requirement. Many parents that choose to use public school or homeschool using a strict curriculum will not choose to send their preschool, yet it doesn’t mean that they are that they are unschooling or “unpreschooling” just like not sending a baby to daycare is not “undaycaring” it is simply called all just part of parenting, it is simply letting pre-school aged children be themselves and learn organically. Then, when they reach school age, unschooling demonstrates that there is no schooling involved and when we reach adulthood, the term is left behind again. There is already so much confusion around the term unschooling that adding another term, especially for an age that is not school aged,  just makes it more confusing.  Essentially, I think that this is why the term “life-learning” is gaining momentum over the term unschooling in many circles.

Another thing is that in my experience over the years, what happens when applying an educational term to this age group is that parents start looking for and applying educational value on activities, and pages and websites that talk about unschooling in the toddler years often paradoxically focus on educational activities, things to do and educational websites. They focus on tricks and games for learning letters, numbers and colours that are fun etc… There is a focus on it being “child-led” yet it is often still parent directed. Basically, it is often about homeschooling based on a child’s interests (which is not unschooling at all).

In many cases that I have seen, parents that don’t agree with unschooling, or child-led learning, but don’t send their kids to pre-school, or don’t start homeschooling curriculum before a certain age, are often less preoccupied by what their pre-school age child is learning then parents that are “unschooling” a pre-schooler or “unpreschooling”.

Until a child is school age, educational terms should be set aside.

All children that are left to their own devices are learning organically. (In essence  until children are expected to learn, they are all being unschooled) Once a child hits school age, unschoolers simply let that organic learning continue and the educational term comes into play as a way to explain the educational style chosen.

But until then, letting a child be a child should be awesome enough!

Homemade Vegetable Bouillon Powder

I have been wanting to make this for ages. I love the convenience of a bouillon cube or broth powder to add to soups, stocks, sauces or many other dishes. What I don’t like about the commercial powders are the ingredients. Too much sodium, to many preservatives, too many products with miles long lists of chemicals and artificial ingredients. The natural products are of course better ingredient wise but they are so expensive and I can’t justify paying the steep price for so little amount of powder.

In the past I have made stock that I have frozen in ice tray cubes and have used them from frozen but they are not the most convenient and they are not concentrated enough so they add water along with the flavour. I have also tried a variation of Annie’s recipe  but it wasn’t what I was looking for which was something dry and easy to store and use and with flavours that I enjoy more.

While looking through the Blendtec recipe book that I got with my blender I found the perfect recipe. I of course adapted it to my liking but it is exactly what I was looking for. It is made with dehydrated vegetables, nutritional yeast, herbs and aromatics. It adds a wonderful depth and the perfect amount of saltines without the salt overpowering the flavours.

You can start with fresh vegetables that you already have around the house and dehydrate them on your own or you can buy dehydrated vegetables from the store (often sold in bulk near the soup broths etc) . I have a dehydrator, so of course I used it, but instead of starting from fresh, I bought a bag of frozen vegetables. All you need to do is put them on the tray still frozen and dehydrate as usual. This mix had peppers, onions and asparagus and I added some leftover raw broccoli that I had in the fridge. I also dehydrated my own mushrooms but you can also buy them dried if you wish and use a bit less in the recipe.

I love how little space dehydrated veggies take and thought I would store the extra, but Willa decided to snack on them and I didn’t have an extras afterwards.

  • 1 c nutritional yeast
  • 1/3 cup Kosher or Sea salt
  • 1/3 c dehydrated mushrooms
  • 1 c dehydrated mixed vegetables
  • 2 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp dried green onion
  • 2 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • 1 tsp dried lemon zest
  • 2 tsp of poultry seasoning
Of course, these herbs and aromatics are what I like to use, but you can change it up to make different flavours. Have fun with it!

Add all of the ingredients to your blender and blend to a fine powder.
Store in a tight closed container (I use a mason jar)

Use a tsp of powder for each cup of water to use as broth, or add it directly to foods for a bit of seasoning.

What a rough week

We went to a party last Saturday and must have come home with something because the day after we got hit. First Colin started to vomit before heading to bed on Sunday night, then Khéna started. Both were sick on Monday and I crossed my fingers that they would be the only ones, but the next day Wilhelmina was hit first thing in the morning and then Xavier.

Simon had stayed home on monday but went to work on Tuesday and then Tuesday evening I was hit and then Simon. On Wednesday Simon stayed home and we were both out of commission along with Willa while the boys mostly took care of themselves.

It hasn’t happened often that the whole family was hit but this was one of those times.

Luckily, besides Willa it turned out to be a 12-24 hour type thing for most of us and to varying degrees of being sick,  but Willa was hit hard. She felt better on Thursday a bit but then was back to being sick on Friday and Saturday and finally started feeling better Saturday evening. Today was the first day in many that she was her normal self and not hanging out on the couch with a bowl. Even though she was quite pitiful, she took the whole sick things amazingly well and made little mess, even at night grabbing the bowl when she started to feel queasy and wiping her mouth afterwards on her own. She is such a big girl now and shows us every day.

I have quite a few posts waiting to be finished up and published but this sickness thing just got to me and I was completely out of the routine for the whole week. Meals were put off for snacking and toast, phone calls were not made , e-mails not answered and I just fell behind on everything…

But I am back now and ready to blog again.

Wilhelmina is Three!

Three years ago yesterday morning, Wilhelmina was born just a couple of feet from where I am sitting right now. Unassisted in a birthing pool in our living room.

Wilhelmina

I can’t believe she is already 3.

She is spunky, energetic, has a sense of style and loves to show off. The minute Simon gets home she is showing him her nails and the way she is dressed (which changes about 4-5 times a day at times. She is very girly and loves sparkles and pink and purple, pretty dresses and nail polish but she holds her own when it comes to her brothers. There is no way the get away with doing her wrong. She also loves making her brothers laugh which at the moment means that she may moon them when they are least expecting. (I have no clue where she learned that one).

She is of course still nursing and is not close to weaning yet.

Are you taking pictures of me?My girl is Three!!

She loves to sing and is constantly singing the ABC song (and gets through it almost perfectly except for L-M-N-O-P which are one strange-sounding letter) and her other favourites are  Twinkle-Twinkle little star and Mr. Sun. She also recognizes many letters and knows a few letter sounds. She loves looking at books and being read to.

She has an amazing vocabulary and speaks perfectly and we love having conversations with her.

She loves playing with whatever her brothers are playing but she is always seeking out the girl character in their games. Being the only girl with three boys, I think that finding things that she relates to has become important for her.

Birthday Girl

For her birthday this year I bought a small jewelry box for her and found rings and bracelets and other things that she can play with.

We also got her another box with a pen, note pad and with a little diary with a lock and key. Small things like that make her so happy.

We also got her something to expand her dollhouse. A car from her critters that she got a few weeks ago at X-mas. She Loves cars so she was really happy to have one of her own.

I always ask the kids what their cake should be and her answer was pink cupcakes. So that is what I made. I tried a new recipe for vanilla cupcakes which turned out perfectly and I used my Vanilla buttercream frosting but added beet juice to give it a perfect pink colour.

She was so excited when it was time to sing happy birthday…

Happy Third Birthday!!

With each milestone, with each birthday, and her being my last baby, I realize that our family is growing and maturing. Each stage that she leaves behind is the last time that we will experience that. It feels bittersweet at times, but it also feels right.

Happy Birthday Wilhelmina!

Lemon Crinkle Cookies

I love lemons, they are fresh and tart and slightly sweet and delicious.

nov12-273

I also love desserts made with lemons, especially when they retain the qualities of the lemon that inspired them. These cookies are just that.

They are sweet, fresh, slightly tart and simply lemony all in a soft chewy cookie. What more could you ask for?

Oh, I know…  They are also one of the quickest cookie recipes and come together in minutes.
