What a rough week

We went to a party last Saturday and must have come home with something because the day after we got hit. First Colin started to vomit before heading to bed on Sunday night, then Khéna started. Both were sick on Monday and I crossed my fingers that they would be the only ones, but the next day Wilhelmina was hit first thing in the morning and then Xavier.

Simon had stayed home on monday but went to work on Tuesday and then Tuesday evening I was hit and then Simon. On Wednesday Simon stayed home and we were both out of commission along with Willa while the boys mostly took care of themselves.

It hasn’t happened often that the whole family was hit but this was one of those times.

Luckily, besides Willa it turned out to be a 12-24 hour type thing for most of us and to varying degrees of being sick,  but Willa was hit hard. She felt better on Thursday a bit but then was back to being sick on Friday and Saturday and finally started feeling better Saturday evening. Today was the first day in many that she was her normal self and not hanging out on the couch with a bowl. Even though she was quite pitiful, she took the whole sick things amazingly well and made little mess, even at night grabbing the bowl when she started to feel queasy and wiping her mouth afterwards on her own. She is such a big girl now and shows us every day.

I have quite a few posts waiting to be finished up and published but this sickness thing just got to me and I was completely out of the routine for the whole week. Meals were put off for snacking and toast, phone calls were not made , e-mails not answered and I just fell behind on everything…

But I am back now and ready to blog again.

Wilhelmina is Three!

Three years ago yesterday morning, Wilhelmina was born just a couple of feet from where I am sitting right now. Unassisted in a birthing pool in our living room.

Wilhelmina

I can’t believe she is already 3.

She is spunky, energetic, has a sense of style and loves to show off. The minute Simon gets home she is showing him her nails and the way she is dressed (which changes about 4-5 times a day at times. She is very girly and loves sparkles and pink and purple, pretty dresses and nail polish but she holds her own when it comes to her brothers. There is no way the get away with doing her wrong. She also loves making her brothers laugh which at the moment means that she may moon them when they are least expecting. (I have no clue where she learned that one).

She is of course still nursing and is not close to weaning yet.

Are you taking pictures of me?My girl is Three!!

She loves to sing and is constantly singing the ABC song (and gets through it almost perfectly except for L-M-N-O-P which are one strange-sounding letter) and her other favourites are  Twinkle-Twinkle little star and Mr. Sun. She also recognizes many letters and knows a few letter sounds. She loves looking at books and being read to.

She has an amazing vocabulary and speaks perfectly and we love having conversations with her.

She loves playing with whatever her brothers are playing but she is always seeking out the girl character in their games. Being the only girl with three boys, I think that finding things that she relates to has become important for her.

Birthday Girl

For her birthday this year I bought a small jewelry box for her and found rings and bracelets and other things that she can play with.

We also got her another box with a pen, note pad and with a little diary with a lock and key. Small things like that make her so happy.

We also got her something to expand her dollhouse. A car from her critters that she got a few weeks ago at X-mas. She Loves cars so she was really happy to have one of her own.

I always ask the kids what their cake should be and her answer was pink cupcakes. So that is what I made. I tried a new recipe for vanilla cupcakes which turned out perfectly and I used my Vanilla buttercream frosting but added beet juice to give it a perfect pink colour.

She was so excited when it was time to sing happy birthday…

Happy Third Birthday!!

With each milestone, with each birthday, and her being my last baby, I realize that our family is growing and maturing. Each stage that she leaves behind is the last time that we will experience that. It feels bittersweet at times, but it also feels right.

Happy Birthday Wilhelmina!

Lemon Crinkle Cookies

I love lemons, they are fresh and tart and slightly sweet and delicious.

nov12-273

I also love desserts made with lemons, especially when they retain the qualities of the lemon that inspired them. These cookies are just that.

They are sweet, fresh, slightly tart and simply lemony all in a soft chewy cookie. What more could you ask for?

Oh, I know…  They are also one of the quickest cookie recipes and come together in minutes.

Seeing the results of unschooling…

We were sitting around the table the other night having Fondue for supper which is a meal that we all enjoy. For those that are not from Quebec, Fondue here has nothing to do with oil, but it is all about broth. It is usually referred to as “Fondue Chinoise” and  it is based on Chinese Hot Pot a meal in which various ingredients are dipped into a simmering broth and cooked gently. Besides cheese and chocolate fondue, it is the only meat fondue that people usually eat around here and is a meal that many people eat on a regular basis.

So we were sitting around the table and the kids were being loud and my brain was just not handling it. So I asked if it was possible to have a few minutes of quiet and suddenly it became a game. The kids were competing on who could not talk the longest. I have to admit is was quite enjoyable to have a quiet meal but what was fun was to see the way that the kids came up with to get messages across without talking.

At one point, Xavier got up and went to get a paper to write what he wanted to say. This is a big deal. Xavier just doesn’t write. He has been reading for years but only recently has he started writing and like most things he does, he will only really start doing it once he gets the confidence that he can. But he wrote what he wanted to tell us without a problem. Afterwards he took to going in another room and recording his voice on his tablet and came back and would play it back for us using various voices.

I think Colin found it the easiest not to talk, he just giggled at things and ate and got up and got what he wanted and was just having fun watching everyone else. He wanted to win the game.

But Khéna… Khéna found it the hardest and messed up a few times simply because he forgot what he was doing but would stop himself when he realized. At one point he was trying to tell us something and we just didn’t understand. After a while, he took the piece of paper and the pen that was on the table and I saw him really thinking to himself while he wrote letters down. (Which reminds me, I need to show him how to hold a pen more efficiently) He handed it over and I looked at the letters. KEFH. I remembered him fake coughing when he was trying to tell us something so I picked up right away on what he was trying to write. KEFH was COUGH. He was asking if was OK to cough. Wow. Here is my newly six year old writing down letters phonetically to make a word.  He may not be reading or writing yet, but the building blocks are definitely there and once the confidence hits he will have no problem in advancing.

I find it amazing.

Unschooling is amazing.

Reading and Math are the two “subjects” that always come up when people question unschooling. How will a child learn something if they are not actively taught? If you don’t present the subjects to them, how will they even find an interest or start to learn? But here it is… they just do. They learn it because it is part of life and we are living life right now. I can’t explain how it happens which is something that some may find it hard to comprehend, but I just know that it does happen and will happen.

So finally Khéna talked again, then Xavier, and then Colin and we went on and had a great movie night.

I think we need to play the quiet game more often.
