5 years in…

The 5th birthday seemed to affect me more than many of the others… There is something about the first birthday and now the 5th that are special… and I assume there are others later on that will do the same.

5 years ago I became a mom, a parent. I went from being alone to having a baby, another being that relied on me.

We went from being a couple to being a family.

I took those transformations not as negative but as positive and so did Simon. I knew from the time before I was pregnant, before he was born, that there was nothing I wanted to do more than stay home with my children, raise them completely, be the primary caregiver and parent. When I held him the first time, when I examined every little hair on his body, when I gave him his first bath, heard those first coos and words, saw those first steps I know that I would never regret being a full time parent.

5 years ago, I was holding my new babe and going to sleep as a family in our home for the first time… I was nursing for the first times, I was holding a tiny new life in my arms… not only any life but one that was created out of the love Simon and I share.

I would have never have thought that 5 years later I would still be nursing… not the same babe anymore but 2 others…

I would have never have thought I would feel so passionate about being a SAHM and the importance of breastfeeding, babywearing, positive parenting, natural living, unschooling and so many other issues. I would have never though that being a SAHM was as tough as it is sometimes but at the same time the most rewarding job I could ever do…

5 years isn’t much time when you really think about it, but I have so much trouble remembering the time before we had kids… and you know what… though movie nights, suppers as a couple at a restaurant, going out anytime and just taking the keys were fun… in all in all…  I don’t miss it…

it has been 5 years that I am a mom… wow….

Soapnuts…

Jen contacted me and asked me about Soapnuts for laundry so I though I would share with everyone…

In going chemical free, we started using soapnuts about a year or so ago.

Soapnuts are not really nuts, but actually a non-edible fruit in which the shells contain saponin which is released in warm water. They can be used to clean almost anything and you can boil them to make dishsoap, wash the car or pets, used as a body soap or shampoo and of course Laundry. Because we use cold water we just soak the soapnuts in warm water for a few minutes before hand.

They have a very mild scent that doesn’t really come through in the laundry so we add essential oils to make the clothes smell nice (I love Patchouli) and since they are SO mild and not really a nut they are perfectly hypoallergenic and safe for even the most sensitive of skin, they also make the clothes really soft and we haven’t used any softener since… Though they don’t make whites whiter, they do work well for all clothes… even cloth diapers and there is NO residue left so no need for stripping diapers!

ok… so I sound like a commercial but they are amazing and I highly recommend them!!!

So where do you get them and how much do they cost? Well.. I buy they from the supplier where I buy wraps and carriers and the suggested retail price for a Kilo is about 19$ which is good for about 144 loads.

You can look around to see what other options are available…

How to use them?

Just put a few in a pouch or sock, either into a hot water wash or soak in hot water and that’s it… to make dishsoap etc you can just boil them in a pot for a few minutes… but of course instructions are included…

Oh… and they can then be composted!

change of plans…

We ended up not going to the cabin this weekend…

After the plumber left on Wednesday I noticed that the floor at the bottom of the stairs had been affected by the water quite a bit. The way that the rooms are placed means that if there was water there… the was water under the flooring of the computer room. However, since the floor is raised, then we couldn’t actually check. So we called our insurance and check what could be done on Thursday. The claim was filed and the claims officer called me about an hour later and then made an appt to come by on Friday morning. He arrived at about 10am and checked the damages and said that the flooring at the bottom of the stairs needs to be replaced and then when I voiced my concern about the humdity in the walls he said that he would have someone check on that too…

So a few hours later a guy calls me to come check the humidity in the walls, he said that he could come by that evening after supper (who drives an hour away to check the humidity in the wall on a friday night!?) anyway, he came by and found a lot more than I would have liked and said that his crew would be by the next day… at about 1pm they got here and did their work… making a hole in the computer room closet and in a few walls with big fans hooked up and a humidifier to catch the moisture in the air…  (I am getting really annoyed at the noise of the fans by now…)

Anyway… after 3 hours of work they left and will be by on Tuesday to get the equipment… and then of course it will be up to the next guy hired to fix the mess they made and the flooring etc…

So, with that happening on Saturday we decided to stay home with the boys and to make it up to Xavier I made cheeseburgers on the BBQ in the rain and went to the “Cantine” and got some fries… then the optometrist called on Sat also saying that the pieces for my glasses were in so we decided to go to the “big mall” on make a day of it on Sunday… we walked and shopped and looked for something for Xavier to buy with the 5$ my mom gave him in a birthday card…

So, my glasses are fixed, I saw a friend that I lost touch with a long time ago and was wanting to get back in touch with…  the boys were GREAT at the mall making it a really fun day and on the way home we decided to go the restaurant for an early birthday supper… So we went to the La Cage aux Sports and the boys again were great and Xavier got a brownie with a candle and a song and he looked so proud!!

So today is his birthday and we are having fun… This morning he helped me bake his carrot cake and we gave him the marble run and it is a hit!  Other presents will come out later, maybe a swim in the pool and tonight we are making homemade pizza DIY style and then eating carrot cake…

I can’t believe that 5 years ago today I was in labour for the first time… fighting the doctors and refusing a “necessary” C/S and in a few hours I was about to become a mom for the very first time, nurse for the first time and I was about to change my way of life completely…

He is going to be 5!!

Xavier’s Birthday is on monday… I can’t believe that he is going to be 5…

He had another growth spurt not too long ago and the size 4 pants that he has been wearing for a year are all at his ankles and now they are fitting Colin…

Not only has he had a physical growth spurt but he also has changed so much in his behaviour… he has more impulse control, he talks his way out of situations more… telling Colin that hands are not for hitting for example and diffusing the situation with words instead of making thing worse by hitting back. His language skills have also increased immensely and when he watches TV he rather watch shows on Discovery Kids or the Discovery channel than Treehouse.

When we asked him what he wanted to do for his birthday he said he wanted to go to the Cabin and celebrate there… with no family but maybe just two of our adult friends… He wants me to bake a Carrot Cake with Cream cheese Icing and to hear the frogs while he sleeps… A friend of mine Amy gave us some Tonka trucks from her husbands childhood and we will bring a few of those to the Cabin also… they are perfect and will be well loved and played with…

I am really happy with the gifts that we finally chose also…
