Next Workshop…

Just wanted to give a heads up that I will be giving my next workshops at Melons et Clementines: in NDG this Saturday, the 20th of Nov…

The EC workshop will be at 11am and that will cover what EC is, how to start an answer any questions that might come up…

The Babywearing Workshop is at 1:30pm and will be an intro to babywearing and I’ll help those that already have carriers and need help using them…

How times have changed…

Last time my mom was over she left some old birthday/ welcome new baby cards and miscellaneous papers from when I was tiny…

The cards were fun to look at, but the other documents were, well a bit scary…

One is book that she got when she was pregnant with me, and the others are two little pamphlets that she received in the hospital concerning feeding.

The pregnancy book was full of information for the pregnant mom. What to expect each month, what is happening in her body, what to eat, ideas for exercise etc… I skimmed though it a bit and then happened to read something that stopped me in my tracks… a page of recommendations…

Here are a few:

  • Avoid  X-rays unless the doctor deemed it necessary (I guess my mom’s doc did find it “necessary”)

4 1/2 hours before I was born

  • Do not ingest any Baking soda or antacids during pregnancy. (Really? What’s wrong with Baking soda?)
  • Limit alcohol and cigarettes if you can. (No!! Wait!!! that cake has baking soda in it… here’s a cigarette and a martini instead…)
  • Avoid getting cold. (so… don’t go outside 6 months of the year)

Of course, this was followed because there were not many other ways to get information about such things in the 70’s… and of course, doc knows best… right?

It gets worse though…

I’ll post the hospital feeding policies and recommendations next….

EC and Babywearing…

This summer a friend passed along my name to a new and amazing Montreal buisness called Melons & Clementines for the potential of giving babywearing classes. This little shop in the NDG district of Montreal is all about breastfeeding. Clothes, accessories, pumps, babywearing shirts and carriers. Not only that, but while you shop, you can sit down and have tea and a lunch while the kids play in the kids corner, all in a very breastfeeding friendly environment. They also have a private room and a schedule for lacation consultants for moms that might need help.

I talked over the phone with two wonderful women that started this little shop, Renee and Marie-Maude, and I went to meet them soon after to talk about what they needed and soon after we set the date for the first workshop. Not only am I giving a babywearing workshop but also an EC one, and not only is it great to meet new people and talk and share about two subjects that I love, I am also making a small amount of money (at least to cover my transporation… lol)

If you are in Montreal, do go and have tea and hang out, you won’t regret it… and if you are looking to learn more about EC and/or babywearing, come to one of my workshops… the next one will be this saturday, with EC in the morning at 11am and babywearing at 1:30pm… (the schedule on their site will have the next workshops when we set the dates)

11 years today…

Simon and I have now been married for 11 years…

I was just 21 when we walked down the aisle but I knew that I had found “the one”… now 11 years and 4 children later, I know that I was not mistaken.

It is amazing how time flies, and though I don’t feel “old”, I look back on pictures and I can see that I looked so young… It won’t be in too long now that we will have been together for more years than not… what a strange concept…

So here is to 11 years and many more to come!!!

What an amazing week (part 2)

I’m home now and finally able to sit down and write this while I nurse the little one…

So, after McClymount park our plan was to head to Smithers. Annie had an eye appointment at 2pm and with a 4 hour drive and 3 kids in tow, we decided that we needed to leave bright and early. One thing about Wilhelmina is that she may not like short car rides, but longer ones are a different story. We were able to drive about 2 1/2 hours before she started to wake up and when she did so we were just right next to an amazing Organic Bakery. We stopped for a treat, some coffee for me, and a bathroom brake and a nurse and then headed back on the road for the final stretch, arriving in Smithers with about 2 hours to spare before the appointment.

I actually didn’t get many pictures of Smithers because I was just enjoying walking and hanging out with Annie and the kids. We checked into our hotel and right away decided that we might spend two nights instead of just one. We headed over to fellow blogger Taimarie‘s home for a nice supper and to hang out and I was so happy to get to know them. Taimarie also met up with us the next day for lunch and a walk which was equally great…

We headed back to Prince-Rupert slowly on Saturday morning and saw the first bit of rain in more than a week…

On Sunday we headed out to Kloiya Bay with Erin, Keith and little Hayden. The weather called for rain in the afternoon so we decided to go in the morning before the rain came and by luck, we didn’t get any rain at all, but we did get tons of wind which made Willa gasp a few times…

What another beautiful place. The tide was going out so every few minutes new beach appeared along with new little hidden creatures. Erin and Keith had brought their little rubber boat and the crab trap and Cam headed out with the baited trap to put it down. The dogs, not wanting to be left behind ran and swam, following them and because of the lowering tide and sand banks they looked at times as if they were running on the water. The trap stayed down for just an hour or so but we had 8 crabs in that time (3 that were big enough to keep) and we cooked them right then and there on the beach… Amazing and delicious!

Finally on Monday we took the day to stay around the house, do laundry and just hang around and planned on going to the museum on Tuesday as I was leaving Wednesday… The museum was great, though I didn’t get any pics, and I was able to finish my tourist shopping there and at another little store after eating an amazing lunch at the Cow Bay café…

If was an amazing week to end the perfect vacation… (have I said amazing enough in this post??… it all truly was 🙂 )
