Fluffy Banana Buckwheat pancakes…

I love the taste of buckwheat…

but I love the fluffiness of my usual pancakes…

In the past, my attempts at buckwheat pancakes with the recipes that I have found, have always made for dense chewy pancakes which I just don’t enjoy…

This weekend at the grocery store my eye landed on some local buckwheat flour and I just knew that I needed to try again…

This time I just adapted my usual recipe and what I ended up with were perfectly fluffy and delicious buckwheat pancakes that the kids and I loved!

so…

mix 2 eggs, 2 1/2 cups of milk, 2 tbsp of brown sugar, 1 mashed banana and 2 tsp of vanilla in a large bowl…

and in another bowl mix 3/4 cup of flour with 2 cups of buckwheat flour, 3 tsp of baking powder and a 1/2 tsp salt…

add the dry to the wet but don’t overmix…

Add more milk of too thick (or more flour if too thin)…. (it really depends on the humidity of the flour etc)

Car seats are for cars…

A news story that I have been hearing on the radio all morning…

Dangers of infants sleeping upright in carseats

The death of an infant in West Island Pointe Claire almost a year ago is prompting a Quebec coroner to warn against the risks of putting little babies to sleep in car seats.

A two month old boy in Pointe Claire died last February 23 after his mother put him to sleep in a carseat placed in his bassinette, hoping that would calm the crying colicky infant.  An autopsy revealed that the baby died of asphyxiation. Quebec coroner Dr. Jacques Robinson says putting an infant in such an upright position to sleep is dangerous, since the baby’s head tends to fall forward.

“The upper airways are obstructed.”

Robinson says about 17 such deaths have happened over the past ten years and they could have been prevented.

“It’s not frequent, but when it happens, it’s very dramatic.”

He warns that car seats should be used only in the car since they help prevent deaths in accidents.

“We recommend to go with this but not for sleeping or using the carseat as a bed.”

And Robinson advises parents should take care to check on their babies in the car seat if they’re sleeping, to make frequent stops on long trips and to take them out at  rest stops.

The carseat along with so many other devices (the swing, bouncy chair, bumbo seat) are so overused… parents use the carseats in the car then clip the carseat from the car into the stroller, then back in the car…. many times I have seen babies being bottle fed with the bottle propped up so the baby is not even taken out to be fed….

It is not in the printed version of the article but the coroner says something like this… “use the car seat in the car and then pick them up” and that babies should be not be in carseats for more than 1 hour…

Great advice!

update… here is a new article that just came up on the CBC with more details…

Parents should not leave young infants sleeping in car seats for long periods of time, said a Quebec coroner who looked into the death of a two-month-old boy who suffocated when his mom placed him in a car seat after a restless night.

The recommendation comes two years after Montreal researchers warned very young babies are vulnerable to sudden infant death syndrome if they spend too much time in a seated position.

“The car seat is for the car. It is not for the bed or sleeping. It is for a car,” said coroner Dr. Jacques Robinson on Wednesday.

‘The head of the baby is heavier than the body. The neck muscle is not straight enough to let the neck rise. So, it falls.’—Dr. Jacques Robinson, Quebec coronerThe case that prompted the coroner’s recommendation happened in February 2008 in Pointe-Claire on Montreal’s west island.

A mother woke at 3 a.m. to feed her baby who was crying. She put the baby back to sleep in his crib. At 6 a.m., the baby started crying again.

The mother used a trick she had used before: she placed the baby in his car seat and then put the car seat in the crib.

An hour later, the mother checked in on the baby and found that he wasn’t breathing. His eyes were glassy and his skin had a white, waxy appearance.

The mother called 911, and the parents started CPR on the baby. The baby was pronounced dead in hospital.

Robinson determined the baby died of asphyxiation due to an obstruction of his upper airway and blamed the baby’s cramped posture in the seat for reducing his ability to breathe.

“The head of the baby is heavier than the body. The neck muscle is not straight enough to let the neck rise so it falls,” said Robinson.

In his report, Robinson notes there are risks to leaving a child sleeping in any seated position. He encourages parents to put their children to sleep horizontally at all times, preferably in a crib.

He also advises parents to move their babies frequently when they are in a car seat in a vehicle. He recommends parents take their children out of the seat every hour while on a long trip.

few new pics…

I realized that I haven’t shared new pics in a while…

Xavier won’t let me take many pics of him… so these are  from a few weeks ago….Xavier

another peice

He is a really cool kid and getting older and changing so much…

he loves video games and is really good at them… At the moment his favourites are Zelda for the wii and Spore…he is also a champ at wii boxing and he can beat pretty much anyone… He plays a lot with Lego’s and makes spaceships of all kinds…

He has lost a few teeth now and there are 2-3 that are loose and he should lose soon…his smile is so weird right now because of it…

the most amazing thing though is to see how all the information that he has been accumulating over the years is now coming together and making sense for him… and it just gets more amazing everyday…

I took these of Colin yesterday…

Colin

Colin

Colin is a such a sweetie… he is easygoing and fun… he is also a bundle of energy and agility… always running and jumping and tumbling and turning… I really would love to get him into gymnastics or circus or something because it is amazing what he can do with his body….

Here is a pic from a few weeks ago of him jumping up and down in the kitchen trying to see how high he could jump…

He is really into Star Wars and Indiana Jones… he loves his action figures and always has a few with him whatever he is doing… he also loves to play video games and his favs are Lego Star wars and Lego Indiana Jones…

Khéna is a cutie… he is always cuddling and wanting to be with us… Like Colin, he sings almost all of the time… he is in a language boom and everyday he talks more and makes more sentences…

He looks up to his big brothers and follows them everywhere… he is very nurturing and very loving… and I love seeing the kid that he is becoming…

Khéna

I think we might turn orange…

I have been eating so many oranges lately…

Not because I choose to get up and get one out of the fridge and peel it…

no…

it is because Khéna figured out that he can peel oranges and loves to do so but doesn’t like to eat them… so many times a day he gets an orange out of the fridge, peels it and brings it to me… or to his brothers…

At least they are good for us… lol

what an amazing weekend…

My good friend went into labour on Friday night… 39 weeks 2 days with breach twins…. she called me just when I was just leaving the mall and was heading home with Simon and the boys…

Her water broke and she was on the way home to relax a bit… and wanted me to come over for the night….

I headed back home (a 40 min drive) and then got Khéna to sleep and got ready to leave…

I got in the car at 10pm and just as I was leaving I got a call from her partner saying that the contractions had picked up and that they were on the way to the hospital…

I went fast…. faster than I usually go… and I actually got to the hospital about 5 min after them…

Going in there she knew that she would be having a c-section but she wanted to experience labour a bit before to get all some of the hormones going so that the babies would get the benefits…

She laboured for about 6 hours and then at about 3:30 she decided on the section…

Just before 5am, she became a mom…

There was a bit of time that everything was quite stressful… a lot of contradictory info and a very stressful time with the doctor and with the c-section… something that was really hard to see my friends going through and was very emotional…

But the babies are beautiful and healthy and so is mom…. they are all amazing!!!

Kai is a gorgeous little man who weighed in at 8 lbs 6oz and Zoe is a beautiful little girl who weighed in a 7lbs 7oz….

I wanted to make sure that nursing was going well before I left and it was going pretty well by the end of the day…

Anyway… it was a long night and then a long day yesterday without sleep… we all tried to rest but it was just hard to do it with all of the emotions and excitement and there were things to be done…

Though there were downs… there were also ups and it was an amazing experience that I feel so lucky to have been part of… I was able to support them and help them when they needed me…

I also feel so proud and privileged of being able to be part of the babies lives right from birth…

me, kai and zoe
