What not to eat while pregnant…

There are so many things that women are discouraged to eat or drink while pregnant… everything from deli-meats to herbal tea, soft cheeses and Salad bars, alcohol and of course my fav… Sushi…

You know…I love Sushi. I love every kind of Sushi, I could eat it many times a week and not get tired of it. You poke around any source for pregnant moms and you will see Sushi near the tops of the list of foods to avoid…

I really hate this.. not because I don’t want to avoid it, it is because it just shows me how paranoid people can be and how paranoid people have become. The recomendations have been twisted and people just listen without questioning…

I agree that it is not the best idea to get Sushi in a hot truck stop on the side of the road… However, I will not avoid all sushi.  Really?  Why should I?

For one, even if you do want to avoid eating raw fish, or if you don’t eat fish at all, there are vegetarian sushi choices. Buying vegetarian sushi for a reputable establishment or making it in your own home is completely safe.

Many pregnant moms that I have encountered have sushi completely crossed out in their minds and even veggie sushi would send them running… of course never without the “It just not a risk I am willing to take, I love my baby too much” comment… like the combination of cucumber, rice and nori makes the food lethal….

So why is it supposed to be out? 2 reasons, Mercury and parasites… 2 solutions…

1. There are lists that show what fishes contain more mercury… these are fish that no one should eat too often… pregnant or not…
2. parisites… Cooking fish is one way to kill parasites and is accepted as a good way. However, what people don’t seem to know is that Freezing the fish also kills parasites and if done correctly it is as efficiant as cooking it. So if you are buying fish from an establishment that uses frozen fish, then you are on the safe side… However, buying sushi from a fish monger that uses fresh fish in their Sushi may be taking a risk. Of course, again, this risk is present whether you are pregnant or not…

Though I don’t eat Soft Cheeses this is another one that I don’t understand… I remember people going nuts when someone mentioned that they ate a Panini with Brie and Sundried Tomatoes… again, people get stuck on what not to eat… Even when the mom proved that there was no problem with soft cheeses that have been pasterised (so pretty much any cheese that you can buy in a store in Canada and the US)… but even if there are no problems just the idea of it is terrifiying for so many…

I am tired of people being scared of everything and then trying to scare you into their thinking also… I am tired of the fear mongering….

I see pregnancy as a great time in my life, I love being pregnant. I don’t think that there is anything that I avoid when pregnant…. I don’t think that we have to avoid anything while pregnant… Moderation is of course the key… but not only during pregnancy but all the time…

I can’t understand those moms… the ones that think that won’t touch sushi, caffeine, chocolate, cheese, deli-meats, alcohol, salad bars, peanut butter, summer berries, most types of fish and then don’t even question or second guess all the tests and routine prodedures that they go through through…. amnio, internals, doppler and ultrasound, glucose tests, epidurals, inductions etc…

they won’t eat a a piece of chocolate but have no problem taking narcotics…

what a weird world…

they like it… they really like it!

Well… the bunk bed wasn’t just a success for a few seconds…

Both boys slept in their beds last night and for the first time in Months (actually it is just the 3rd or 4th time in his life) Colin slept through the night before coming into our bed (8-5) .

I think that the difference was that they were more warm and probably way more comfortable then they were in their old beds… Neither of them came into our bed this morning freezing… they were not wearing different pj’s and didn’t have more blankets but I think just having real mattresses made the difference (those plastic crib mattresses don’t hold heat quite well) and probably their new mattresses made it feel a bit more like our bed…

They also have had quite a bit of fun just hanging out in their room and on their beds today… Xavier brought some books up and Colin did to and both sat in their beds looking at books… Thy also played together, Colin gets under his sheet and Xavier pulls it down and then the wrestle…

Colin still has to remember that he can’t stand up in his bed….he has hit his head a few times now… not hard enough to cry but hard enough to want a kiss to make the bobo go away… but even a blown kiss will do 😉

Here are a few more pics from today…

bunk bed and blisters…

Well… my mom told me about a year ago that she wanted to buy a bunk bed for the boys when they were a bit older or when their beds didn’t work out anymore… Well, the time had come I reminded her and she said to go ahead and buy it using her card (well after she approuved of it)…

So yesterday I went to pick it up at Sears and of course it came in 3 quite small boxes…. ahh…. assembly…

We also went and bought the mattresses yesterday and they were to be delivered today so this morning I started the process…

Well… it was interesting… 6 hours on and off, an unexpected visit from a friend, a few mishaps, the boys running all over the place, Xavier building things with the wood, a scraped and bruised knee (mine), blisters from using the allen key and at some point I got hit in the head with a pair of pliers….

Well… of course, half way though I see something I did wrong and was able to correct that, it was a pretty big mistake but half an hour later I had corrected it…
Then a screw just didn’t want to go in right and was sticking out about a cm not budging either way, and the more I tried the more it didn’t budge and then the allen key snapped in half… I went to get another allen key from a past project and it still wouldn’t budge and then of course the screw got stripped…
I decided to leave it like that for the time being and kept on assembling… Both beds done, it was time to put the top bunk on the bottom one… I decided I wasn’t going to even attempt that one by myself (which is unlike me) and about 5 minutes later the men with the mattresses arrived and I asked them to do it and they did with a smile…

I then kept on going, putting the ladder together etc and then got to the rail… well… two other screws did the same and got stuck and stripped… though the allen key was spared…

And then once the whole bed was pretty much assembled I find another mistake. The hole for one of the vertical pieces that reinforces the top rail is about 3-4 inches off from where it is supposed to be… of course, my mom then calls and I tell her and she says that I probably put it together wrong…. Ughh!!! no I didn’t!!! it is a defect… the reason I am certain is that everything else fits perfectly… on the peice the defect is on there are also the holes that the ladder fits in and they were perfect… Anyways… after she asks a few more questions (maybe I had the wrong screws etc) she finally realizes that it is probably a defect and then tells me to bring it back and get another one… YEAH RIGHT!!! I didn’t spend all of that time assembling it for nothing!! what happens if the next one has the same problem…

Sears is sending someone to check it out in a week but I don’t know what more could be done that we can’t do by ourselves…

Here is one of the screws… and the misplaced hole (just below berts hair)…

And here is the bed all done… besides the few little things that didn’t work out… it is a pretty nice bed and the boys are really happy…
