ok… this was my test shirt just to practice putting things together etc (no pattern)… the fabric is a bit stiff (it was cheap and I bought it to practice with) and it makes me look a bit pregnant from the side… so I don’t know if I am going to try to fix it a bit so I can wear it or what…
anyway… here it is…
And then I had enough confidence to make this one… which I am pretty happy with… I was about to make it about the same style but didn’t have anymore of the same elastic… So… I got out the elastic thread and shirred it… I didn’t know how to shirr but it worked…
Now I am thinking about shirring the bodice part of the first shirt to see if that looks better…
Very nice!
My daughter has a shirred dress (is that what’s called “smock”?) that needs to be repaired… So basically, you made straight “coutures” with an elastic thread?
BTW, I just love Colin’s drawing on your last post… My 2 year old is in an artistic phase right now and just started to draw “bonhommes” with all their parts! Toooo cute!
I like them both! I saw something shirred the other day and I was thinking of getting some elastic thread. I think you may have convinced me. 🙂
Thanks!
Michele… shirred and smocked are not exactly the same… shirr is with elastic thread and gives a bit the same effect but smocking is hand done and is like embroidery… I would love to smock but I don’t have the patience!
To shirr though… you hand wind elastic thread onto the bobbin and then use a long zigzag stitch (or a stretchy zigzag stitch) and then just sew straight lines… the tension on the bobbin will create the effect…
Thank you! I’ll give it a try!
… and Happy Anniversary!
