How funny! yesterday i wrote to her to talk about Communidée center and offer my appartments as a “stating place” as i rent short term appartments (furnished) that are in pointe st charles, verdun (two neighbourhoods you pinpointed) and quartier latin!!! if anyone else is interested: homeinmontreal.com and stayinmontreal.com !

Hi Debra,

Yes, I live about an hour outside of Montreal but most of my community is based there. Don’t worry about the language, you will have no problem just using english as most employees, especially in Montreal need to be bilingual. Montreal is such a multi-cultural melting pot!!!

There is a great home learner group and home learning centre in Montreal called Centre Communidée which was started by a homeschooling (unschooling) mom… http://communidee.ca/about/
Most of the parents that you would meet through there are pretty alternative. I can also help you get in touch with quite a few families that would love to welcome a fellow “alternative” mom….

Yes, the city is expensive but there are some great places if you look in the right communities. If you are looking for good price to space ratio and want to be close to downtown and most activities, look for places in Verdun, Point St-Charles, St-Henri, Lasalle etc.. Basically the south west district.

I don’t know if you are buying or renting but if you are renting apartment listings here are a bit weird… a 5 1/2 means that there is a bathroom (the 1/2) and then 5 rooms, (such as kitchen, living room, dining room and bedrooms)

Also, July 1st is moving day here so it is the craziest time to come as everyone moves on the same day, and it also means that all leases are up near the same time, all moving companies are booked at their highest price and everyone is looking at the same time. Stupidest idea ever!!

The museums are great… the Redpath is free and the fine arts permanent exhibit is free also… there must be others that are the same… The National library is amazing too!!

If ever you have questions don’t hesitate…. 🙂

(and anything you’d like to pass on about being an english-speaking homelearning “alternative” family in montreal would be beyond helpful!)
